Nestling birds produce a multicomponent begging display that has visual (e.g. posturing) and vocal (e.g. call rate) elements. Most work on the function of the display has focused on each component separately. However, understanding the evolution of complex displays such as begging requires knowledge of how the components function collectively. The purpose of our study was to determine how postural intensity and calling rate together influence parental feeding decisions in tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor. We compared how begging components responded to a manipulation in which pairs of nestlings were either free to approach the parent when it arrived to feed (unconfined treatment) or confined to the back of their nestbox by a Plexiglass partition (confined treatment). We found no significant differences in postural intensity between treatments, but calling rate was significantly higher in the confined treatment. In both treatments, postural intensity, but not calling rate, correlated with hunger. Both components positively and independently correlated with the likelihood of a nestling being fed, although the correlation with postural intensity was stronger. Previous work suggested that both posture and call rate advertised hunger in nestling tree swallows. Here, call rate was not associated with hunger, but rather was affected by nestling position. These results suggest that calling may serve an additional role in helping nestlings in disadvantaged positions attract parental attention. The results also suggest that calling may have a complex relationship with hunger, position and nestmates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: We present an ecological risk assessment methodology at the watershed level for freshwater ecosystems. The major component is a pollutant transport and fate model (a modified EUTROMOD) with an integrated uncertainty analysis utilizing a two-phase Monte Carlo procedure. The uncertainty analysis methodology distinguishes between knowledge uncertainty and stochastic variability. The model assesses the ecological risk of lentic (lake) ecosystems in response to the stress of excess phosphorus resulting in eutrophication. The methodology and model were tested on the Wister Lake watershed in Oklahoma with the lake and its trophic state as the endpoint for ecological risk assessment. A geographic information system was used to store, manage, and manipulate spatially referenced data for model input.  相似文献

DOI: 10.1111/j.1752‐1688.2012.00657.x Abstract: The objectives of this study were to measure periphytic growth responses to enrichment with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and simultaneous N and P using in situ bioassays in streams draining Beaver Reservoir Basin, Northwest Arkansas; compare periphytic growth responses measured with in situ bioassays with a range of land use and point sources; and test the lotic ecosystem trophic status index (LETSI) as a simplifying metric to compare effects of nonpoint‐source pollutant‐limiting variables of N, P, and sediment across the basin. P limitation was observed at sites across a transect of stream orders throughout the basin; however, at the two sites with highest ambient nitrogen concentrations, limitation was often coupled with nitrogen limitation. Nutrients were at nonlimiting levels at both of two sites below wastewater treatment plants in all seasonal deployments. A Michaelis‐Menten growth equation described LETSI as a function of ambient PO4‐P concentrations (p < 0.05); the midpoint (LETSI of 0.50) corresponded with a PO4‐P concentration of approximately 3 μg/l. Change‐point analysis indicated a threshold point at LETSI of 0.80 and 15 μg/l PO4‐P. These low values show that the periphytic community has a high affinity for available P, and that the watershed as a whole is sensitive to available nutrient inputs.  相似文献

Social structure, which is a function of the patterns of interactions among individuals, is particularly variable in fission–fusion societies. The underlying factors that drive this variation are poorly understood. Female northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) live in fission–fusion societies where females form preferred associations within groups that vary daily in size and composition as individuals switch roosts. The goal of our study was to test the predictions that preferred associations and social networks of female northern long-eared bats vary with reproductive period and age. We also tested the prediction that preferred relationships persist across years despite movements from summer roosts to winter hibernacula. Network analyses revealed that during gestation, females roosted in smaller groups where they roosted more regularly with fewer individuals than during lactation. This variation may reflect different social strategies to mediate higher energetic costs during lactation. Females of all ages roosted more often with younger individuals, which in turn had more direct and indirect associations than all other age classes. Younger individuals may play a role in maintaining connections between individuals, perhaps as a result of younger individuals being more exploratory. Temporal analyses suggested that relationships can persist for years as some pairs roosted together for multiple summers. We suggest that the dynamic nature of fission–fusion societies is associated with individual strategies to increase fitness relative to individual characteristics, in this case reproductive condition and age.  相似文献

The panel's opinions are provided in a question‐and‐answer format, whereby selected experts provide an answer to a question. The kinetics and efficiency of sterol production and bioconversion of phytosterols in two heterotrophic protists Oxyrrhis marina and Gyrodinium dominans were examined by feeding them two different algal species (Rhodomonas salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta) differing in sterol profiles. R. salina contains predominantly brassicasterol (≅99%) and <2% cholesterol. The major sterols in D. tertiolecta are ergosterol (45–49%), 7-dehydroporiferasterol (29–31%) and fungisterol (21–26%). O. marina fed R. salina metabolized dietary brassicasterol to produce 22-dehydrocholesterol and cholesterol. O. marina fed D. tertiolecta metabolized dietary sterols to produce cholesterol, 22-dehydrocholesterol, brassicasterol and stigmasterol. G. dominans fed either R. salina or D. tertiolecta metabolized dietary sterols to make cholesterol, brassicasterol and a series of unknown sterols. When protists were fed R. salina, which contains cholesterol, the levels of cholesterol were increased to a magnitude of nearly 5- to 30-fold at the phytoplankton-heterotrophic protist interface, equivalent to a production of 172.5 ± 16.2 and 987.7 ± 377.7 ng cholesterol per mg R. salina carbon consumed by O. marina and G. dominans, respectively. When protists were fed D. tertiolecta, which contains no cholesterol, a net production of cholesterol by the protists ranged from 123.2 ± 30.6 to 871.8 ± 130.8 ng per mg algal C consumed. Cholesterol is not only the dominant sterol, but a critical precursor for many physiologically functional biochemicals in higher animal. As intermediates, these heterotrophic protists increase the amount of cholesterol at the phytoplankton–zooplankton interface available to higher trophic levels relative to zooplankton feeding on algae directly.  相似文献

In scallops, gametogenesis and spawning can diminish the metabolic capacities of the adductor muscle and reduce escape response performance. To evaluate potential mechanisms underlying this compromise between reproductive investment and escape response, we examined the impact of reproductive stage (pre-spawned, spawned and reproductive quiescent) of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, on behavioural (i.e., escape responses), physiological (i.e., standard metabolic rates and metabolic rates after complete fatigue) and mitochondrial capacities (i.e., oxidative rates) and composition. Escape responses changed markedly with reproductive investment, with spawned scallops making fewer claps and having shorter responses than pre-spawned or reproductive-quiescent animals. After recuperation, spawned scallops also recovered a lower proportion of their initial escape response. Scallop metabolic rate after complete fatigue (VO2max) did not vary significantly with reproductive stage whereas standard metabolic rate (VO2min) was higher in spawned scallops. Thus spawned scallops had the highest maintenance requirements (VO2min/VO2max). Maximal capacities for glutamate oxidation by muscle mitochondria did not change with reproductive stage although levels of ANT and cytochromes as well as cytochrome C oxidase (CCO) activity did. Total mitochondrial phospholipids, sterols and the proportion of phospholipid classes differed only slightly between reproductive stages. Few modifications were detected in the fatty acid (FA) composition of the phospholipid classes except in cardiolipin (CL). In this class, pre-spawned and spawned scallops had fairly high proportions of 20:5n-3 whereas this FA in reproductive-quiescent scallops was threefold lower and 22:6n-3 was significantly higher. These changes paralleled the increases in CCO activity and suggest an important role of CL on the modifications of CCO activity in scallops. However, mitochondrial properties could not explain the decreased recuperation ability from exhausting exercise in spawned scallops. Shifts in maintenance requirements (VO2min/VO2max) and aerobic scope (VO2max − VO2min) provided the best explanation for the impact of reproduction on escape response performance.  相似文献
